What Types of Medical Coding Training Programs Are Offered?
Medical coders who want to secure the best jobs in the industry need to become certified. There are a number of certification programs and programs that prepare students to sit for certification exams available, including medical coding online training programs and programs that feature campus-based medical coding classes. The American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) has designed a curriculum called the Professional Medical Coding Curriculum (PMCC), which teaches the most up-to-date skills in the field. One of the first things to do before starting a new program is to decide what kind of education you need. If you want a broader education and intend to go back to school for a higher degree later on, you will want to research associate’s degree programs in medical coding and billing. If you’d rather jump into the workforce and learn just the skills you need to become a medical coding professional, a shorter certification program is probably the best choice for you. Whichever path you decide to take, you must enroll in a program that is accredited. Make sure that your program is on at least one of the general lists of approved institutions of higher learning published by CHEA, like the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology. The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) also offer lists of approved coding education programs on their websites.
By attending a school or enrolling in a training program that is approved by the AHIMA or CAHIIM, you will receive the training you need to sit for the professional CPC exam or CCA exam.
